Uno, dos…Tres! Easy as 1,2,3 I found myself caring and loving a new sliver lab puppy with a deformity in his leg. He was born with 5 toes (not including his due claw) and a broken knee that could not be fixed, amputation was the only way to go according to two different vets. My brother, who had the litter of sliver labs, asked if I would take him and give him a caring home so he wouldn’t have to put him down. How could I say no to such a cute face? My boyfriend and I found ourselves struggling to get him potty trained and eating while our other dogs are around. The one thing that stood out to me in the first month of having Tres is that he is the biggest cuddle bug you will ever meet. He wakes me up in the morning by kissing me and putting his head on my shoulder so I will pet him. We decided that we should have the surgery preformed after Christmas once all the craziness was over with the family. At 15 weeks of age, on Wednesday Jan. 2, 2013 we took him that day (I couldn’t handle it alone, we had to shop and find other things to do not at home to keep my mind off of him). He came home that very night, all drugged up and a sad look on his face. The very next day he was hopping in and out of the doggie, but he still cant seem to sleep through the night, he is constantly waking me up every hour ( I think he is getting restless as the pain killers wear off). He gets his stitches out next Saturday! Does anyone have newbie tips for this lady and her amazing boyfriend who wont leave his side!
aww you guys, that is so sweet of you to bring him home with you, thank you for giving him a chance.
My biggest piece of advice is to visit our Discussion Forums, where you’ll find lots of help from folks who have been there. Also check out our Required Reading List and ebook, Three Legs & a Spare, so you know what to expect.
Stay strong, and don’t let your pup do too much, too soon. He’s got plenty of time to live it up.
Thanks for joining us!
Hello, I have just joined Tripawds because I am the friend of a couple who rescued a three-legged Welsh Terrier. He was born with the deformity – it is thought that his mum nibbled at his leg and damaged it and quite recently the vets amputated the whole of the leg, so the pup is now left with one hind leg.
He recovered from the operation very quickly – got used to wearing the collar to stop him licking at the wound. He now runs around happily – he is a very loving and lovely dog. I help my friend by walking him and helping train him, and over this last weekend I have had him stay with me and my two dogs (another Welsh Terrier and an Airedale). We have had a lovely time with him.
So my advice, as poor as it probably is, is to take things slowly as he recovers from his op. He will recover very quickly and will run around as though nothing is different. Believe me, it is more difficult for you than it is for your lovely dog. He’ll just get on with it.
